MONTGOMERY, Ala (WIAT) — Many conversations involving Alabama lawmakers are happening at the Republican National Convention as the political event enters day two.

Houston County Republican Party chairman Alex Reynolds says history is being made at the convention. He also noted the unique atmosphere in the aftermath of former President Trump’s attempted assassination.

“You talk about the energy in the room, there’s really no words to describe it,” Reynolds said. “Everybody yelling and cheering and just grateful, thankful to God that he spared President Trump’s life.”

Sen. Katie Britt also spoke on the announcement of Trump’s vice president nominee, JD Vance. She says the Ohio senator is not just a qualified running mate, but also a friend to her. Both politicians formed a strong bond as they started in the Senate at the same time.

“Wesley and I are so proud to call JD and Usha friends,” Britt said. “I am so excited for the world to hear his story, [it’s] that of the American dream.”

What are Project 2025’s ties to the Trump campaign?

Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Rick Pate said the convention has brought party unity to the swing states.

“There’s a lot of people here from states that are more purple — or even blue — states. It’s sort of like the whole Auburn-Alabama thing,” said Pate. “If you’re in a competitive state, I think it’s more real to you. Everybody is real encouraged here.”

Representative Dale Strong says it’s important to continue raising money this week for Republicans to win in the swing states.

“It’s gonna take the presidency, it’s gonna take the House and the Senate,” said Strong. “You can’t do it without one of those of the trifecta.”
