The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is running a statewide dog adoption event from July 15 to 21. This event will be “fare free,” meaning it will cost nothing to adopt a new four-legged friend.

The event, called Mass Saves, is a “week-long adoptathon,” according to a statement by the MSPCA. Mass Saves will take place in the MSPCA’s four shelters in Boston, Barnstable, Methuen, and Salem, as well as several of their partner shelters in Berkshire, Worcester, Springfield, Brockton, Lowell, and Hopkinton.

MSPCA estimates that a normal adoption fee for dogs is around $500.

“A large drop in adoptions nationwide has resulted in an overpopulation of dogs living in US shelters,” the MSPCA said. “Our adoption centers are at 90% capacity, but we’re determined to do everything we can to continue to provide a safe place for local surrender to land, and help our relocation partner shelters.”
