FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The Fayetteville City Council unanimously approved Sunday alcohol sales on the November ballot and the city’s first Climate Action Plan at its meeting on July 16.

The group “Keep Our Dollars In Fayetteville” made efforts to bring Sunday alcohol sales to Fayetteville.

The Washington County Quorum Court needed 4,500 signatures verified by July 1 to pass to the city council.

Sunday alcohol sales in Fayetteville could be on November ballot

If the ballot passes, Fayetteville would be the last major city in Northwest Arkansas to allow alcohol sales on Sunday.

The Climate Action Plan broadens the 2018 Energy Action Plan and will be a policy guidance tool for the city on all things related to climate change and protecting the planet.

The city’s environmental director Peter Nierengarten says the plan includes a new “nature based solutions approach,” which looks at the city’s natural lands and what it can do to help.

“One is to help sequester carbon dioxide,” Nierengarten said. “So the carbon that’s already in the atmosphere, and how can those lands also help mitigate or buffer the impacts of climate change? So help to reduce heat impacts in the summer, or help reduce flooding impacts when we have heavy rainstorms.”
