WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Local nonprofit Storytime Village will hold the annual Kansas Literacy Festival on Friday, July 27, an event aimed at encouraging good reading habits to children and families through art and storytelling.

It will feature eight young authors who participated in the Literacy, Entrepreneurship and the Arts Program (LEAP) summer camp. The books will be $10, and the authors will be available for book signings. All of those proceeds go to the students.

Literacy is a lifelong skill that can increase job opportunities and access to higher education. In Wichita, one-third of third-grade students scored the lowest level on state reading tests, something the nonprofit tries to address.

During the summer, there is a potential for “learning loss” among children due to extended periods outside of a classroom environment. During this period, the nonprofit provides literacy resources to underserved populations to help keep children and families engaged.

The festival will be held at Bradley Fair at 2000 N. Rock Rd. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More information about the event can be found on Storytime Village’s website .
