CASS COUNTY, Mich. — This weekend, Vandalia buzzed with the return of the Underground Railroad Days, a vibrant celebration of historical legacy hosted annually by the Underground Railroad Society of Cass County. As summer’s warmth embraced Michiana, the event provided a deep dive into the history of the Underground Railroad and its significant impact on the region.

Over two days, attendees explored a rich tapestry of history through engaging exhibits, food stalls, and craft vendors. The festival’s centerpiece was a meticulously recreated Civil War soldiers' camp, showcasing the 102nd U.S. Colored Troops and offering a glimpse into the lives of those who fought for freedom.

Mike Moroz, President of the Underground Railroad Society of Cass County, highlighted the event’s roots and ongoing mission. “We got started in 2009 and quickly became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit,” Moroz said. “Our mission is to educate people about the Underground Railroad and restore key sites that are integral to its legacy.”

Among these crucial sites are the Bonine House, Bonine Carriage House, Bouge House, and Brownsville School #1. The society’s efforts to restore these historic buildings aim to transform Cass County into a cultural tourism hub, drawing history enthusiasts from across the country.

The Underground Railroad Days not only celebrate the historical significance of these landmarks but also spotlight the dedication of local historians and preservationists. As Cass County continues to honor its past, the event stands as a beacon of education, community engagement, and historical preservation.
