Ex Jeopardy! champ Isaac Hirsch blames recent game show loss on him using the 'wrong math'

Isaac Hirsch’s winning streak on Jeopardy! has finally come to an end on Tuesday night’s episode.

The former Jeopardy! champ went head-to-head with new competitors Jay Fisher and Erika Stromerson. Isaac started the game off sort of rocky, which is unlike himself seeing as how he normally is way ahead of his fellow contestants after round one. However, this time he finished the initial Jeopardy! round in third place, coming in at $400; meanwhile, Erika had $600. Jay was far in the lead with $7,800.

Jay remained in the lead the entire game albeit he and Isaac were neck-and-neck by the time Final Jeopardy! hit.

Going into the last round Jay was at $16,200, Isaac was at $15,300, and Erika was at $600. Both Jay and Isaac waged big in Final Jeopardy! - Jay bet $14,401 while Isaac bet an even $14,000. However, Erika played it safe, waging zero dollars in Final Jeopardy! Noone answered correctly for the final question so each contestant except for Erika lost big.

Though they were close, Jay came out victorious against Isaac finishing with $1,799 next to Isaac’s $1,300. Many Jeopardy! fans were saddened at Isaac being dethroned after he just won his ninth game on Monday night.

In a Jeopardy!-themed forum on Reddit a plethora of the game show’s viewers admitted that they weren’t ready for Isaac to go.

“I'll miss Isaac! I felt bad when he didn't know about ‘dipnoi’ lungfish. One of my friends is a marine biologist so we were nervous when listening,” one shared in the thread.

“Ah man I’m disappointed that Isaac lost, but at least he’ll be back in the TOC,” another added.

Isaac also commented in the forum, sharing his thought process during Final Jeopardy! and why he bet so much.

“Okay, so why did I wager $14,000?,” he wrote. “The short answer is I did the math wrong. (Although I guess it’s kind of obvious based on how I spent the first minute after the game looking at my scratch paper in horror).”

Isaac added: “I was trying to subtract 14,401 from 16,200, and somehow came up with 1300 instead of 1800 as the number I needed to arrive at if I got it wrong, hence the 14,000 wager.”

In the middle of his statement the trivia master gave “credit” to Jay for being such a worthy competitor.

“All credit to Jay, who absolutely murdered me on the buzzer, especially in the first round,” Isaac praised.

Toward the end of his explanation he wrote: “t’s been a fun experience watching these air back and I appreciate how nice people have mostly been to me. I’ll have a lot to prove in ToC [Tournament of Champions]; not least that I can do basic arithmetic.”

Isaac is set to compete in Jeopardy!’s Tournament of Champions in the fall.
