    Want to go wine tasting? 5 wineries to try in and around Windham, New London County

    Eastern Connecticut may not have the same reputation as California's wine country, there are several vineyards in the area. Whether you prefer white or red, they offer something to satisfy every wine enthusiast.

    And, if you are learning about wine, these wineries will keep you coming back for more.

    Not only do these wineries offer top-notch wines, but they also provide scenic views, romantic backdrops, and family-friendly space. You can even have your wedding at some of these wineries.

    Here are some vineyards to check out in Windham and New London counties.

    Taylor Brooke Winery, Woodstock

    Located on a 44-acre farm in Woodstock, Taylor Brooke Winery offers something for everyone. They have classic wine, fruit-infused wine, sparkling wine, cider, brandy and more. Not to mention, the winery is just a short walk away from Taylor Brooke Brewery.

    The winery offers guided wine tastings, tours, wine flights, and wine by the glass and bottle.

    Taylor Brooke Winery is open 2 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, 12 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 12 to 5:30 p.m.Sunday.

    Sharpe Hill Vineyard, Pomfret

    Sharpe Hill Vineyard produces wines that have received more than 350 awards for excellence in national and international competitions. American chardonnay, cabernet franc and angelica rosé are among the wines on their menu.

    You can purchase Sharpe Hill’s world-class wine in their tasting room year-round every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. At this time, the vineyard does not ship its wines, however, they can be purchased at many stores throughout Connecticut.

    Maugle Sierra Vineyards, Ledyard

    Maugle Sierra Vineyards is more than just a winery.

    In addition to producing premium wines, the vineyard hosts weddings, wine tastings and live music. While the vineyard does not offer official tours, self-guided tours are welcome. Red, white and rosé are among the wines they produce.

    Looking to host a private event? Maugle Sierra has the space to seat 66 people in their tasting room, 30 on the deck and more than 26 in the courtyard. The winery is open Thursday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

    Preston Ridge Vineyard, Preston

    Situated on 60 acres, Preston Ridge Vineyard is located where the peak of a ridge provides breathtaking views of the Connecticut countryside. The venue hosts a variety of different events, including weddings, corporate events, wine tastings and live music. Self-guided tours of the vineyard are also welcome.

    The vineyard currently serves 12 wines, including white, red and rosé.

    Summer hours of operation are Wednesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    Stonington Vineyards, Stonington

    Stonington Vineyards offers great deals on wine.

    Those who become members of the Stonington Vineyards Cellar Society earn perks such as 10% off their first case purchase and discounted tickets to the vineyards’ wine festival.

    Members of the premiere wine club will receive first access to limited-release wines and discounted tastings at the winery for the member and a guest.

    Wines for sale include red, white, rosé and chardonnay.

    Stonington Vineyards is open seven days a week, year-round from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The vineyard also has extended hours until 7 p.m. on Saturdays in June through September.

    The vineyard offers wine tastings daily, year-round from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free winery tours are available Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday at noon.
