Voters in Washington County have until Friday, Aug. 2, to register or switch party affiliation to participate in the upcoming Republican primary runoff for County Commissioner District 2.

The runoff election, scheduled for Aug. 27, will see Micheal Colaw and Corey Shivel compete for the position, following Colaw's 36% and Shivel's 38% in the June 18 Republican primary vote. Daryl Worley, who received 28%, did not advance.

Runoff races historically have low voter turnout, and with only 55 votes separating the two candidates in the primary, it's predicted to be tight, with every vote counting. Additionally, the Aug. 27 election is winner-take-all, as there is no Democratic challenger in the race.

Washington County Election Board Secretary Yvonne House reminded residents that voter registration applications must be received or postmarked by midnight on Aug. 2 to be eligible. U.S. citizens who are Oklahoma residents and at least 17 ½ years old can apply, but must be 18 to vote.

Applications can be submitted to the County Election Board, motor vehicle agencies or downloaded from oklahoma.gov/elections. The Election Board office at 401 S. Johnstone Ave., Suite 4, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, contact 918-337-2850 or navigate to washingtoncounty@elections.ok.gov.
