3 Steps to Repair Drywall Cracks, for Beginners

Here are three main steps to follow when attempting to repair your own drywall cracks—based on the video.

    1. Check for studs

Molly suggests using a stud finder to ensure that your drywall crack is not directly in front of a stud. Cracks do tend to run parallel to studs and can even form right over them.

    2. Scrape away excess

Using a razor blade, Molly always makes sure to carve out the crack a little deeper to make sure she can fill it completely during the next step. As she says, "it will allow our joint compound to really get in there."

    3. Mesh tape

After your first light coat of joint compound in the crack, Molly recommends smoothing it out as best you can and then adding a layer of mesh tape over the crack, using a putty knife to smooth that down as well. This product will help create a super sturdy bond between the two materials, ensuring that your wall won't be prone to cracking so easily.

If you incorporate these three steps into your drywall repair journey, you can consider yourself an expert DIYer.
