Was Alexis Mac Allister on Argentina team bus? Chelsea and FIFA begin action over 'racist' chant

The Argentina national team has come under scrutiny after Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez posted a live video from the team bus that showed some players singing a 'racist' song. The French Football Federation has filed an official complaint, with the chant — which originated at the World Cup in 2022 — referencing the African heritage of some of France's players.

Chelsea has confirmed that it has opened disciplinary proceedings against Fernandez. While he was the one filming following the Copa America triumph, others were singing, so it stands to reason that other clubs could yet follow suit.

Naturally, Liverpool supporters are concerned to know whether Alexis Mac Allister was present on the bus when the chant broke out. If he was, the club should be urged to open proceedings of its own — but it appears that he was not present at the time .

According to the Daily Mail , citing reports from Argentina, Mac Allister was among those not on the bus. Lionel Messi was also absent, having remained in Miami (where he plays his club football) after sustaining a serious ankle injury during the final.

Argentine outlet La Nacion has also said that Mac Allister was elsewhere. It cites . For his part, Fernandez has issued an unreserved apology. The midfielder posted a statement to social media: "I want to apologise for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations," he wrote.

"The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry."

Since the final, Mac Allister has posted a photo of himself with the Copa America trophy to his Instagram Stories. He appears to be on a plane.

Liverpool.com says: This is a very serious issue, and finding out the facts is the most important thing. Mac Allister will be entitled to a break before linking up with Liverpool again, and will miss the US tour as a result, but it's important for the club to check in with him at the earliest opportunity to get a better understanding of this incident.
