University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center reaffirmed its position as Iowa's premier hospital, securing top honors in the U.S. News & World's report of "Best Hospitals" for 2024-2025.

The school's various hospitals and clinics earned national recognition in eight adult specialties.

"This national recognition is a testament to the compassionate, high-quality care our teams provide, as well as UI Health Care's unique value to the state," says Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH, UI vice president for medical affairs and the Tyrone D. Artz Dean of the Carver College of Medicine, in a news release.

MercyOne in Des Moines was ranked second-best in Iowa.

The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center has been the top-ranked hospital in Iowa in each of the last 34 years. Three adult specialties were ranked in the top 50 nationally.

UIHC earned its highest placement in ophthalmology. The ears, nose, and throat specialty came in at number 14, and the cancer specialty ranked at number 41.

University of Iowa's medical field earns high praise

U.S. News ranked five other specialties at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center among the nation's top 10%.

The high performing specialties are: cardiology, heart and vascular surgery, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery and urology.

Jamieson attributed the hospital's consistently high rankings as a direct correlation to the staff and their commitment to serving Iowans across the state.

"Our team members are passionately dedicated to advancing health care across Iowa and beyond through clinical care, research, and training," Jamieson said. "Iowans are fortunate to have a widely recognized and nationally respected academic health system right here in our state, so we can be there for them when they need us most."

    Rankings consider patient care, research

The U.S. News and World Report's methodology is based on several key metrics. This year, the methodology examined hospitals "that are notable for the degree to which they care for patients from certain socially vulnerable backgrounds, such as lower-resourced households and neighborhoods and racial and ethnic minorities."

According to U.S. News and World Report, the updated methodology also included a review of internal hospital transfers, outpatient outcomes, observation stays, adjustments to weight of rehabilitation, and the rating of gynecological cancer.
