Two people were killed Tuesday in a crash that left two others hospitalized, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol .

A two-vehicle collision happened at about 9:50 a.m. in Darlington County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.

A 2020 Kia Forte was driving north on Ebenzer Road , according to Butler. Near the intersection with Timberlake Drive, the car collided with a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was heading south on Ebenezer Road, Butler said.

That’s near Interstate 95 and the line with Florence County, about 6 miles from Darlington Raceway .

Both the driver and a passenger in the Kia died at the scene, according to Butler.

The Darlington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver and passenger who were in the Kia.

There also were two people in the Chevy SUV, and both that driver and passenger were hurt and taken to an area hospital, according to Butler. Further information on their conditions was not available.

    No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the vehicles to collide, or if one of them swerved toward oncoming traffic, was not available. Butler did not say if the crash is still being investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 483 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least seven people have died in Darlington County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 26 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
