Unsettled pattern unfolding late this week

Wednesday: Despite mostly cloudy skies, temperatures will still manage to reach the lower 90s as numerous showers and storms form during the afternoon hours, lasting into the evening. Outside of any storms that erupt, heat index values will sneak into the low 100s. Showers and storms become fairly widespread in the afternoon and evening, and some could produce locally heavy rainfall.

Looking Ahead: As a small dip in the jet stream develops mid-week, a cold front within this trough will attempt to move through central Alabama. However, it is the middle of July and having a cold front this far south during Summer is rare. Therefore, it won’t completely pass through the area, so it will stall right across the region for several days. A few waves of energy will pass along it, providing additional lift and support for increasing rain showers and storms through the rest of the week.

The front is forecast to stall heading into the upcoming weekend, allowing for repeated rounds of rain, heavy at times, all the way through Saturday and Sunday. At this time, Thursday appears to be one of the wettest days this week with a more widespread rain in store.

Numerous storms will continue to dot the radar through the weekend. Therefore, if you have any outdoor plans this weekend, having a Plan B would be ideal in case you get rained out. Due to the abundance of clouds and rain across the area, this will hold temperatures down in the middle to upper 80s Wednesday through Sunday. Scattered storms and highs in the upper 90s remain into the start of next week.
