Bacteria in water and black growth: See latest Stanislaus County health inspections

    By Dominique Williams,

Total coliform bacteria was in the water distribution system of a Hughson market, making the hand washing, food preparation and cleaning water not potable.

Black growth was in the ice machine at a Modesto Mexican restaurant.

These were some of the violations observed during health inspections at Stanislaus County food facilities in late June.

The majority of the 2,400 permitted food service establishments in the county receive two unannounced routine food safety inspections per year, according to the Department of Environmental Resources . The website says inspection reports are scanned weekly.

Food trucks that operate under a Stanislaus County Health Department permit also are inspected by the county, though those are scheduled and done at the department’s office.

The reports are linked. For updates on individual restaurants, search the DER website .

Agave Azul , 6724 E. Whitmore Ave., Suite A, in Hughson, had five violations during a reinspection June 25. The ambient temperature of the walk-in refrigerator was 43 degrees (must be 41 degrees or lower). An outside storage shed was being used to store canned and dried food products. The interior of the ice machine had grime stain buildup. The food safety certification and sanitizing test strips were lacking.

All violations were noted as corrected during a second reinspection July 1.

Four Seasons Buffet , 1773 Prescott Road in Modesto, had seven violations during a reinspection June 25. Uncovered and unlabeled containers were found in all three walk-in refrigerators containing raw meat, raw chicken and raw shrimp. The walk-in freezer floor was soiled with food debris. Cleaning supplies and a dirty brush were stored in the bathroom hand-washing sink and the bathroom trash can had no lid. The ice machine drain pipe was not draining directly into the floor sink. All of the food handler cards were expired and the manager food safety certification was expired.

The food handler cards and manager food safety certification were still expired during a second reinspection July 8.

La Morenita , 1667 E. Hatch Road in Modesto, had five violations on June 26. Black growth was observed on the interior side of the lid and on the shield of the ice machine. The hood for the back cooking line had a large amount of dust accumulation. The tile coving along the wall near the cooking line was pulling away from the wall. The floor behind the cooking equipment was heavily soiled. Food handler cards and the food safety certificate were not available.

Mo’s Oasis , 8000 E. Whitmore Ave. in Hughson, had one major violation June 26. The food facility did not have potable water for use in hand washing, food preparation and cleaning/maintenance. The water system was found to have total coliform bacteria in the distribution system. Ice bag sales were allowed to continue along with other prepackaged food and beverage sales. Mo’s will be allowed to return to normal operations once the water system provides the department documentation that the distribution system is free of total coliform bacteria.
