A 10-year-old boy was killed Tuesday afternoon after a personal watercraft crash on Old Hickory Lake during a joint Tennessee National Guard and Boy Scouts of America event in the area of Creighton Lane in Wilson County, according to officials.

The crash involved two personal watercraft vessels on the lake near Boxwell Reservation Camp, used by the Boy Scouts of America,, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The Wilson County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and confirmed the crash happened during a Scouting event.

The water vessels were owned by Boxwell and were being operated by staff, according to the TWRA. A juvenile passenger was aboard each vessel.

The 10-year-old boy was the passenger of a 19-year-old woman and both were seriously injured in the crash, according to the TWRA.

Neither has been publicly identified by authorities as of Wednesday afternoon.

The boy was participating in the Tennessee National Guard’s annual Youth Development Week, according to a joint statement from the National Guard and Middle Tennessee Council, Boy Scouts of America, issued Wednesday afternoon.

Each year, the council and state National Guard partner to provide children of National Guard families the opportunity to experience outdoor programs, said Scout Executive/CEO of the Middle Tennessee Council, Boy Scouts of America Larry Brown. Development week has been held at Boxwell in recent years, Brown said.

“We are all devastated and heartbroken over the tragic accident and doing everything possible to care for all those involved and affected by providing counseling and support to the families, campers, and staff during this difficult time. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with the families suffering this great loss and we grieve with them in this trying time," a joint statement from both organizations reads.

After the crash, the woman was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. Her condition was not immediately known Wednesday.

Life saving measures were performed on the boy by responding deputies until paramedics arrived. He was taken to Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital, where he died from his injuries, officials said.
