MEADE, Kan. (KSNW) — Work begins next week on a new passing lane for U.S. Highway 54 in Meade County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says crews will begin construction of a new passing lane starting Monday, July 22, near the U.S. 54/160 junction east of Meade and extending northeast around 2 miles. Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the construction zone.

Flaggers and a pilot car will direct traffic through the construction zone. Motorists can expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

Liberal-based J&R Sand is the contractor for the $8.4 million project. Weather permitting, work is expected to be completed in December.
