What Dresses Are Most Flattering for Plus Size?

“Finding the most flattering style has more to do with your shape and silhouette than size,” says Kam Thomas Throckmorton , a fashion stylist with over 20 years of experience dressing plus-size women. With that said, if she has to pick one universally flattering shape, she recommends opting for a wrap dress “because you can manipulate where you accentuate the smallest part of your waist.”

Things to Consider When Shopping for Plus-Size Summer Dresses

    Plus and Curve Dresses

In addition to shopping for styles that flatter your body shape and silhouette, Throckmorton says to be weary of curvy size charts. “Plus size clothing is often labeled as ‘curvy,’ which is misleading,” she explains. “I have clients who are a size four and curvy and clients who are a size 20 and have no curves.”

    Simple and Smart Designs

When shopping for plus-size summer dresses, Throckmorton also recommends looking for simple but smart designs. “Many plus size options come with details like embellishments or elements that will quickly cheapen a look,” she notes, adding that these features make a dress harder to accessorize and align with your personal style. “A sleek dress will provide a blank canvas to create a look that represents you.”

    Pay Attention to Straps

Throckmorton always says to pay attention to the straps and how they flatter (and support) your chest. “Thin spaghetti straps can look out of proportion on a large chest,” she explains. “I suggest going strapless so you don’t see the contrast of the thin strap, or add a sizeable necklace to offer some visual weight.” When it comes to straps, she says it’s all about finding a balance, and “everything is a trick of the eye.” So, if you can use straps — or lack of straps — to play with your silhouette and style, you’ll be able to make what you want to wear work for you.

    Don’t Settle
Above all else, Throckmorton says do not settle for something that you don’t love. “Plus-size designs often feel like an afterthought with many brands, but some are putting in the work to offer beautiful and thoughtful designs,” she explains. For example, Never Fully Dressed has inclusive sizing for all of their items and their pieces are “cheerful, stylish, and sexy,” Throckmorton notes.
