Kacey Musgraves Says She Got Through Her Last Breakup By Listening To Old-School Country About “Being Completely Brokenhearted”

A girl after my own heart... and some incredible advice. Kacey Musgraves released her most recent album Deeper Well in March of this year, which certainly felt more grounded than her previous effort Star-Crossed . Of course, the Texas native came onto the scene pushing boundaries and doing things her own way, as is evidenced by her debut single "Merry Go 'Round" and many other songs since, like "Biscuits" and "Follow Your Arrow," to name a few. And while she's definitely experimented with sounds outside of country, she's always been true to herself and what she wants no matter what exactly it looks, or sounds, like. In a recent, extensive interview with The Bitter Southerner , Kacey talked about her career thus far, more specifically her aforementioned most recent album, though she also spoke about a recent(ish) breakup that left her very sad: "When I was going through my last breakup, I was so sad." Her most recent public relationship was with Cole Schafer, though it's unclear if she's referencing him or someone else, but I digress... of course, like any good country girl, there was one way that she got through it, and that was by listening to: "Old-school country music that was supercentered around being completely brokenhearted." And really, is there any other way? For me, the saddest country songs you can imagine are more therapeutic than anything money could ever buy. Kacey told interviewer Christina Lee that Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, John Prine and obviously Willie Nelson were some of her top choices, and apparently she made a playlist with some of those songs not long ago which we absolutely NEED: "Willie, obviously. Ray Charles is in there a little bit. Marty Robbins, Buck Owens. There's a lot of places where country sort of bucked up to other styles, too, like the Everly Brothers. Roger Miller was an amazing songwriter." Couldn't agree more... sad country songs just make me so happy, and I need Kacey to reveal that playlist or make it public because it sounds perfect .
