Bill Maher urged Democrats to swap President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket, insisting there’s “still time” to avoid “disaster.”
Maher sat down with Dave Rubin for an episode of The Rubin Report released on Tuesday and argued Democrats could pull out a “huge positive” by picking a different candidate to run against Donald Trump in November.
“It does not have to be a disaster. There is still time. Absolutely there is still time, not only to make it not a disaster, but to make it a huge positive,” Maher said.
The comedian and Real Time host called for a “fresh, new face” and called U.S. politics a tired “sitcom.”
“This country’s a sitcom. It’s been on for eight seasons. It’s fucking tired and we need new characters. They’re tired of looking at Uncle Joe and crazy, fat Trump,” he said.
The conversation was briefly derailed when Maher noticed Rubin lit the wrong end of a joint he’d offered him — the episode was filmed in Maher’s Club Random podcast studio. After Maher schooled Rubin on the fine art of properly lighting a joint, the conversation returned to politics.
“Just get everybody who is not 100 years old, got a ‘D’ by their name, and is sort of a centrist and you can win this election. Just give us that choice,” Maher said about a potential new Democratic nominee.
He predicted there’s “no chance” Biden ends up being the nominee and joked he’d put money on it.
Maher has criticized Biden along with other Democrats amid concerns about the president’s age and stamina, but the comedian argued conservative critics go too “extreme” with their takes. Maher rejected arguments that the president is suffering from a degenerative disease.
“Trust me, he has his marbles, he could make the right decision,” he said. “He’s not crazy, he just shouldn’t be president. It’s a day to day job.”
