Parker McCollum Recalls How He Wrote “Rest of My Life” in Just a Few Minutes While “Dead Sober”

Growing up in Conroe, Texas, Parker McCollum always loved country music. Listening to icons like Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, and Porter Wagoner, his family introduced him to the rich history of country music. While he spent a great deal of time working on a cattle ranch, the singer eventually branched out, giving country music a try. And since walking on stage back in 2013, McCollum built an impressive career with the release of four studio albums. With numerous hit songs, the singer recently discussed why “Rest of My Life” held such a special place in his heart.

Although a top song from McCollum, the singer explained to Audacy’s Scott Kay the writing process behind the song. “[2020] was crazy for me. I had my first number one climb the charts and go number one platinum and we didn’t play a show the entire time. I know it was a wild time for everybody, but it was an interesting time for me.” He continued, “I was kind of putting myself through the ringer trying to write songs and it just wasn’t working. Then so I woke up one morning and dead sober and wrote ‘Rest of My life’ in just a few minutes.”

Besides being able to write the song in just a few minutes, McCollum discussed how the entire process happened while he was sober. Not needing alcohol to help the creativity flow, the singer insisted, “That’s like the prime example of the kind of songs I’ve always tried to write. So that one’s been very special to me.”

Parker McCollum Not Looking To Produce A Dad Song

Outside of songwriting, McCollum and his wife, Hallie Ray Light, prepare for the birth of their first child. With country singers like Luke Combs and Jordan Davis using their talents to fashion songs around fatherhood, it seems McCollum won’t join the growing trend.

While not criticizing the music of others, McCollum said, “No dad songs for me…I don’t want to write cliche dad songs. If it’s something that really stands out and is well-written and really honest and special, then I would cut it. But I don’t think I’ll sit down and try to write dad songs any time soon.”
