    Corey Comperatore died a hero.

He was the man who was killed Saturday during the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump . Comperatore, 50, was sitting in the stands when a gunman opened fire while Trump was speaking. He shielded his wife and daughters from harm with a stunning act of bravery and courage. It cost him his life but saved theirs.

Comperatore is survived by his wife and two daughters. Each of them should be, or, quite frankly, should have been, if not already, invited to be Trump’s guests at the Republican National Convention . Comperatore, a former fire chief and volunteer fireman, was already a hero before Saturday. He was a guardian, a watchful protector, regularly willing to risk his life to save others. On Saturday, he gave his life so his wife and daughters could live theirs.

As such, Comperatore’s family should be Trump’s guests at the convention. It’s the right thing to do. And it shouldn’t be done as a publicity stunt. It shouldn’t be done for any accolades or adoration. It should happen because Comperatore was a hero. Sitting in the stands next to Tucker Carlson is great, but sitting next to Comperatore’s family would be much better. This isn’t criticism in any way, mind you. It is just my opinion of what I believe is the right thing to do.

If there are any people who deserve to be at the convention, it's Comperatore's family. Hopefully, inviting his widow and daughters has already happened. And if the family declined, that would be understandable. Moreover, if they declined and Trump kept that information private, that would also be commendable because that would also be the right thing to do. It is unknown either way if such an invitation was offered. If not, hopefully, it will soon.

In an interview earlier this week with the New York Post, his widow, Helen, discussed declining a phone call from President Joe Biden, who contacted her to express his condolences.

“I didn’t talk to Biden,” Comperatore said . “I didn’t want to talk to him. My husband was a devout Republican, and he would not have wanted me to talk to him.”

She also mentioned that Trump called her Tuesday afternoon, according to the New York Post. Her reaction was quite different that time. She did take Trump’s call.

“He was very kind and said he would continue to call me in the days and weeks ahead,” she said of Trump in a post on her Facebook page. “I told him the same thing I told everyone else. He left this world a hero, and God welcomed him in. He did not die in vain that day.”
