On Wednesday evening in New York, Marc Jacobs and Safilo Group will introduce “The Sunglasses” eyewear collection for fall.

Enriching the contemporary line of Marc Jacobs eyewear, “The Sunglasses” are the first eyewear pieces introduced in Jacobs’ successful “The” Items collection (i.e., The Totebag), which was introduced in 2019 and now comprises a huge assortment of bags, wallets and accessories. Jacobs has previously done sunglasses with Safilo, but this is a special range.

Angelo Trocchia, chief executive officer of Safilo Group , said, “The relationship with Marc Jacobs is a longtime relationship that started in 2004 and was renewed in April until December 2031.”

“We built something special for 20 years and it’s a great story to build on,” Trocchia said. “Now they are launching ‘The Sunglasses’ collection, which is in line with Jacobs’ ‘The’ Items collection. Finally, the eyewear has joined the club,” he said.

“The Sunglasses” are offered in a range of three different unisex shapes, all branded with the codes inspired by the Marc Jacobs ready-to-wear and accessories collections. Their edgy shapes in bold acetate feature “The Sunglasses” logo prominently visible on the temples, conveying a strong fashion statement.

The eyewear pieces are offered in a solid color palette paired with plain, shaded or mirror lenses, in line with the irreverent spirit of the brand. Retail prices range from $150 to $175.

Among the looks are the Marc 773/S sunglasses, which feature an oversize wraparound frame and are available in black with gray lenses, white with silver mirror lenses, red with gray lenses and silver with silver mirror lenses.

The Marc 774/S sunglasses feature a geometric frame, available in black with gray shaded lenses, Havana with brown shaded lenses, ivory with brown shaded lenses and pink with gray shaded lenses.

The Marc 775/S sunglasses have a rectangular frame with flat-top, available in black with gray shaded lenses, Havana with brown shade lenses, ivory with brown shaded lenses and red with brown lenses.

The sunglasses will be available in Marc Jacobs stores and e-commerce and in U.S. department stores such as Bloomingdale’s, as well as select eyewear stores worldwide, starting in September.

Trocchia said the Marc Jacobs eyewear “has been performing very well.

“It’s strong in North America, it’s strong in Europe, especially in France and Italy. We are very happy. We strongly believe that North America can be a great growth opportunity for the years to come,” he said. The optical is the larger piece of the business, but “the Sun is relevant, and we hope it will grow more with the launch of this special collection,” he said.

Explaining what distinguishes Jacobs from other designer brands, Trocchia said, “Marc has been very specific in terms of the color and the consistency. There’s a level of innovation that they put on their product and their position as a fashion house. That’s why they’re quite successful. Their product has specific materials, and we believe it will work. It’s going to be consistent with the so-called items collection of Marc’s. You will see a consistency between the eyewear collection and the other accessory collections. There will be a consistent message.”

When renewing their licensing agreement last April, Trocchia said, “Since the beginning of our partnership in 2004 we have collaborated profitably to make Marc Jacobs an iconic landmark within the eyewear category, offering unique and highly distinctive models in every collection. During these 20 years, the brand has grown to become one of the most emblematic brands of Safilo’s contemporary and premium offering, with a strong global appeal for both men and women, and with still many new opportunities for growth in its core U.S. market as well as worldwide.”

Safilo licenses such brands as Marc Jacobs, Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Carolina Herrera, David Beckham, Dsquared2, Etro, Kate Spade New York, Rag & Bone and Isabel Marant. Safilo’s owned brands include Carrera, Polaroid, Safilo, Smith, Blenders and Privé Revaux.
