If you've noticed in increase in police on the roads, we promise you're not crazy.

Since July 15, law enforcement in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee led the annual “Operation Southern Slow Down.” This week, there will be an increase in presence on the roads to cut back on speeding.

In 2023, there were 3,256 car crashes that were fatal or resulted in serious injury in Tennessee. As of July 16, 2024 has had 3,024 fatal or seriously injured car accidents. A majority of these crashes happened during the summer months when people are traveling more. Southern Slow Down was created with the intention of cutting back on these needless accidents and crashes.

Here's when Operation Southern Slow Down will happen.

What is 'Operation Southern Slow Down?'

During this week, Tennessee Highway Safety Office will join Tennessee Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies to crack down on speeding. There will be an increase in police presence on highways and interstates all throughout the week.

If there is a time to slow down, Tennessee, this may be the week you want to do it.

When will 'Operation Southern Slow Down' be in force?

State and local law enforcement agencies in all five states will be conducting a week-long speed enforcement awareness campaign from July 15-20 aimed at saving lives and preventing reckless driving and speeding.

Tips to stay safe on the road

As you travel, here are some tips to stay safe on Tennessee roadways this summer:

    • Anticipate increased traffic during peak travel periods. Plan ahead and give yourself ample drive time.
    • Buckle up and make sure all passengers are buckled up the entire trip.
    • Slow down in construction zones. Keep in mind that construction increases during the summer season.
    • No matter how eager you are to reach your destination, speeding and driving aggressively is dangerous. Stay patient and give other road users plenty of space.
