Madonna biopic, ‘Who’s That Girl,’ back in the works: Everything we know

It looks like the once-shelved Madonna biopic is back in the works according to all of the typewriter clickety-clacking going on over at Madge’s house.

On Tuesday (7/16), Madonna posted a series of photos to her social accounts over a clip of JT 's "OKAY" showing herself hard at work typing away as she rewrites the script for her planned biopic -- now being titled Who’s That Girl -- a nod to both her 1987 album and comedy flick released that same year.

"I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..OKAY (Story of my life)," she captioned her post, along with cocktail and money emojis for good measure, either alluding to all of the typewriter ribbon replacements she's going to be needing in the coming months, or all the paper she's about to collect.

Last January, the long-awaited biographical film, said at the time to be directed by Madonna herself as a way to stop “misogynistic men” from telling her story, was shelved indefinitely in order to accommodate her hectic schedule, including her 40th-anniversary Celebration Tour which began last summer.

“I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film,” Madonna told Variety in 2022, adding, “No one’s going to tell my story, but me.” Her progress, at the time, she said was churning along, though she was struggling to trim it down. “I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter,” she said. “I’ve been whittling away at it, but it’s like hacking off my limbs.”

Though no further details about the flick have emerged just yet, we do know that Inventing Anna ’s Julia Garner (who joined Madonna on stage in NYC at the end of 2023) is still going to be playing the role of the “Material Girl,” chosen from over a dozen candidates according to Entertainment Weekly .
