The niece of Kim Hunter Daugherty is the recipient of this year’s scholarship named for the late Perquimans County educator.

Harlee Hunter, who graduated from Perquimans County High School in May, was awarded the $1,000 Kim Hunter Daugherty Scholarship during a scholarship event earlier this year.

Hunter will attend the University of Mount Olive in the fall to study exercise science and minor in sports psychology. According to the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, she hopes to be an athletic trainer after college.

Hunter was a defensive specialist for the PCHS Lady Pirates volleyball team. She also was a member of FFA and HOSA, an organization that helps students become future healthcare professionals.

The Kim Hunter Daugherty Scholarship is funded through an endowment established in Daugherty’s memory. Daugherty was an educator for more than two decades in Perquimans County and was a fifth-grade teacher at Hertford Grammar School at the time of her death.

The endowment provides a scholarship each year that is available to a PCHS senior who plans to pursue a career that will help others.
