ELGIN, Texas (KXAN) — One man is dead and another has been arrested after a suspected road rage incident in Elgin Tuesday night, police said in a release.
The Elgin Police Department said it responded around 7:08 p.m. Tuesday to a disturbance and shots fired call at U.S. Highway 290 and County Line Road.
Police believe the situation started as a road rage incident between the victim and another driver. Police said they both left their vehicles and got into a fight, which escalated into a shooting.
Police found a man, later identified as Joseph Stanczyk, dead from an apparent gunshot wound, EPD said.
Fabian Salas, 34, was arrested and charged with murder in the incident, police said.
According to an affidavit, as Salas was being handcuffed by an officer, he said “he needs help” while looking at Stanczyk. The officer asked, “Who did this?” and Salas responded, “I did.”
A witness told police she saw two vehicles speeding and cutting each other off until they stopped at a red light at an intersection.
The witness told police Stanczyk got out of his vehicle and approached Salas’ vehicle, so Salas got out of his vehicle as well. The two men then began to fistfight with each other, according to the affidavit.
“Salas and the victim stopped fighting and [the witness] believed they exchanged words … Then [the witness] saw Salas pull a gun and shoot the victim in the face,” the affidavit said.
As of Wednesday morning, attorney representation wasn’t available for Salas. This story will be updated if that information becomes available and his representation provides a statement on his behalf.
