A member of Perquimans County High School’s NCHSAA 1A baseball championship teams in 2021 and 2022 is this year’s recipient of the Christopher Todd Conway Student-Athlete Scholarship.

Collin B. Roberts, who graduated from PCHS in May, was named the recipient of the $500 scholarship during a scholarship banquet earlier this year.

The Christopher Todd Conway Student-Athlete Scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating PCHS student-athlete who played baseball. The scholarship is named for Conway, who died from cancer in January 2016 at age 39.

“Chris was a talented baseball player who earned a baseball scholarship to Barton College,” a press release from the Perquimans County Schools Foundation states. “Later he leveraged those skills coaching for sports team in Perquimans County.”

Before his death, Conway told his family that he would like to offer a scholarship to assist a baseball player do what he had been able to do: realize his dream to attend college, the foundation said.

Roberts plans to attend College of The Albemarle in the fall and then transfer to East Carolina University to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

While in high school, Roberts was a dually enrolled honor student at both PCHS and COA, where he was engaged in a number of clubs, organizations and sports.

According to the foundation, Roberts’ “dream is to work as a mechanical engineer” at Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City.
