Two graduating seniors at Perquimans County High School are this year’s recipients of the $1,000 scholarship awarded by William Paul Stallings American Legion Post 126.

Vivien Lane and Zoe Clifton, both of whom were members of the PCHS Marching Band, received the scholarship presented by the Hertford-based American Legion post in appreciation of the band’s participation in the veterans organization’s annual Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day ceremonies.

Lane plans to attend East Carolina University and pursue a career in education. She graduated as an honor student from PCHS, receiving an extensive number of awards and honors in the marching band, Winterguard and the Drama Club. She served as section leader and drum major in the band.

Clifton plans to attend Western Carolina University where she plans to study for a career as an emergency medicine technician. Clifton was a dual-enrolled student at PCHS and College of The Albemarle. She completed CPR certification and an internship with Perquimans County Emergency Medical Services.

To be considered for the American Legion’s annual scholarship, students must be a graduating senior at PCHS, a member of the PCHS Marching Band for a minimum of three years, and have been accepted at a two- or four-year university.

The application process also requires a student-written essay describing how they felt about participating in the American Legion’s Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day ceremonies.
