Under the Bridge , the limited true crime drama series starring Lily Gladstone , has earned the actress a historic feat at the 2024 Emmy Awards . With a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Movie or Anthology, Gladstone has become one of two Indigenous women ever to be nominated in an acting category at the prestigious awards show.

Gladstone shared the accomplishment with fellow Indigenous actress Kali Reis, who is nominated in the came category for her role in True Detective: Night Country .

In addition to becoming the first two women of Indigenous background to be nominated for acting at the Emmy Awards, Reis and Gladstone are the first two Indigenous performers to be nominated at the 76-year-old show in 17 years. In 2007, August Schellenberg became the first-ever Indigenous actor to be nominated. He earned a nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his role in HBO’s Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.

Gladstone’s awards run has been full of history-making accolades and nominations. Her leading role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) led to her becoming the first Native American to win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and the first to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

The newly announced Emmy Awards nominations also include a number of nods for Reservation Dogs , the cast and crew of which are largely Indigenous people. Indigenous Canadian actor D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the series, which is up for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Gladstone appeared in two episodes of Reservation Dogs between 2022 and 2023. When Killers of the Flower Moon arrived last year, Devery Jacobs — a First Nations actress who played Elora on Reservation Dogs — praised the actress for carrying her character Mollie with “tremendous grace” but added that it was “fucking hellfire” to watch “the horrors white men inflicted on us.”

Speaking with Rolling Stone at the time, Gladstone stated: “Her reaction is a response to a lot of trauma that particularly Native women feel seeing these things for the first time. I had a lot of time acclimating myself to the script. The Osage people have had their lives to understand this history. The process of making this movie gave a lot of people a chance to speak. Ultimately, Osage reaction is what I care about the most.”

While accepting her Golden Globe for her role in the film, Gladstone acknowledged: ‘’This is a historic win, it doesn’t belong to just me, I’m holding it right now — I’m holding it with all of my beautiful sisters in the film, and my mother… I’m standing on all of your shoulders.”
