“I’m all in her face, and she’s staring at Rudy” - Sebastian Telfair on hooking Rudy Gay up with a girl who robbed him

The notion that NBA players require extended time as teammates to form a solid and memorable bond is not always accurate. Sebastian Telfair and Rudy Gay ’s relationship serves as a prime example.

Despite sharing the court for only the latter half of the 2012-13 season for the Toronto Raptors , the 6’0” point guard’s good-intentioned deed left Rudy with such an incident that he won’t ever forget.

Telfair set up Gay with the wrong girl

While it's not uncommon for NBA athletes to occasionally enjoy their celebrity status in social settings, one particular night took a drastic turn for Gay. Revealing a hilarious incident during his interview with DJ Vlad, Telfair shed light on how his goos-intentioned gesture for Rudy to set him up with a woman in a club turned out to be the latter’s nightmare as he spent the night alone with her.

"We in LA, we play for Toronto… we get out of the bus. I go talk to them, 'How you doing?' I get their numbers. So, we get to the club. There was a black girl, kind tall, finest ever. I’m all in her face, and she's staring at Rudy," Telfair said . " She's like, 'Yeah I want Rudy.'... I hook them up, and two minutes later I don't see them no more. The next morning, we on the bus, going for the shootarounds. I get on the bus, he got the ‘sad face’ ‘I'm like, 'What happened?' He’s like, 'Yo, shorty took my chain.'"

It's safe to say that Rudy's experience of finding the chain missing was indeed distressing at the time. However, Sebastian couldn’t help but laugh, recalling his teammate’s ‘sad face’ during the entire bus ride.

What Rudy should have done

Sebastian provided further insights into the incident by revealing that the woman in question demanded merely $200 from Rudy, who at the time was under a 5-year, $82 million contract, earning over $16.4 million annually.

"If you get a girl in your room, and she asks for some money, give her that money," Telfair added. "He told me she asked for $200. This is $20 million - Rudy Gay."

Reflecting on the outcome, the 39-year-old admitted that had he been in his former teammate’s place, he would’ve rather prioritized paying the demanded amount rather than upsetting someone who could hand him a more substantial financial setback.

While this story is undeniably humorous, it also highlights the mockery that NBA players endure when they attempt to enjoy their celebrity status without considering the consequences. One can only imagine the repercussions if such an incident were to occur with a modern-day NBA star in this age of social media.
