Most of Marion County’s 11 traditional public school districts saw slight increases in ILEARN English language arts scores but stayed the same in math.

Marion County's scores reflect statewide results released on Wednesday that showed very little year-over-year change with minimal increases in ELA and static math scores.

Most of the 11 districts still fell below their pre-COVID test scores. Indianapolis Public Schools was the only district to come close to matching its 2019 scores, with 13.5% of students meeting proficiency standards in both ELA and math scores. In 2019 13.8% of students passed the two portions of the test.

ILEARN is the state’s standardized test that assesses proficiency in math and English/language arts in grades 3-8. ILEARN also tests grades fourth and sixth in science and fifth in social studies.

Most Marion County districts either saw slight increases or stayed virtually the same in their English language scores. Warren Township registered the biggest single-year increase going from a 16.1% overall ELA proficiency in 2023 to 19.4%.

About half of Marion County districts decreased their math scores while the other share increased slightly. The district that saw the largest single-year increase was Washington Township Schools, which rose from 30.2% of students proficient in math in 2023 to 34%.

The district that decreased in math scores the most in a single year was Perry Township, which dropped from 39.7% in 2023 to 37.5%.

Among Marion County districts, Speedway Schools continues to remain at the top of each ILEARN category but the district’s combined score essentially stayed the same as last year’s score.

Speedway Schools is the smallest school district out of the 11 in Marion County, serving around 1,800 students last school year.

Speedway and Franklin Township continue to be the only districts that topped the state’s average scores across all three ILEARN categories.

Overall statewide results showed that 41% of Hoosier students were proficient in ELA standards, 40.7% are proficient in math standards and 30.8% proficient when it comes to combined scores.

IPS saw drops in its scores across all three ILEARN categories from last year, with the biggest drop in math with a decrease of 1.8 percentage points.
