The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man fatally shot by deputies last week during an armed confrontation at a 7-Eleven in Oak Ridge.

According to a news release Wednesday from the agency, the man killed Friday was 19-year-old Tristan James Robert Mayberry.

The Sheriff’s Office gang unit was surveilling a home with multiple gang members suspected of crimes inside when Mayberry, armed with a Glock with an extended magazine, was seen leaving the house, according to the agency. He was seen riding a scooter to 7-Eleven on West Oak Ridge Road where he was confronted by deputies.

The Sheriff’s Office said Mayberry initially turned away from a deputy and appeared to reach for the gun when he turned back toward him, despite the deputy telling him to stop multiple times. Mayberry was shot and fell to the floor and then there was a struggle for the gun and he was shot again, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating and will turn over findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review.

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own internal investigation after FDLE’s review is complete. The deputy that killed the suspect is on temporary paid administrative leave pending the FDLE review. His name has not been released.
