NORTH DAKOTA ( KXNET ) — Summer is still in full swing, and so are the hot days when going outside sounds miserable.

However, staying inside means kids run around or get bored, making the day even more challenging.

Thankfully, a play therapist, sensory expert, and founder of Meemzy Magic — Jennifer Stalley — has seven free ideas to beat the heat and boredom.

The first thing Staley suggests is building an edible sand sensory bin . Blend old, stale cereal into a sand-like texture for a sensory experience. It’s perfect for young kids who would want to taste their creations. You can hide toys for a treasure hunt or let them practice writing letters, numbers, and shapes.

You can also create a DIY snow sensory bin . Create snow from ice from the freezer by blending it. Kids can build tiny snowmen, and you can add toys for imaginative play, or sugar and food coloring.

Things to do around town: July 15-21

The third activity is an ice excavation . Freeze small toys in a water bowl and have kids chip away at the ice to uncover the toys. It encourages problem-solving and fine motor skills.

The fourth thing is a mini indoor water park . You can set up a small space with tubs or bowls of water for indoor water play. Engage kids with floating toys, transferring water, or by adding food coloring.

The fifth thing is ziploc bag fun . Put paint inside a baggie and seal it tight for mess-free painting. Kids can use their fingers to mix the colors, create patterns, and practice writing or drawing. If you don’t have paint, you can use hair gel or cooking oil.

The sixth activity is collages . Use stickers and parge paper to make sticker collages. It encourages creativity and fine motor skills. If you don’t have stickers, you can use old magazines and cut out and glue the pictures.

The final thing is a sensory movie experience . Dim the lights, provide fidget toys or heavy blankets, and choose a movie with gentle visuals and sounds to create a calming and engaging experience. Watch movies you already own or can stream for free.
