Raiders QB Gardner Minshew Receives Rough Prediction For 2024

The Las Vegas Raiders entered the 2024 NFL offseason in search of a quarterback to compete with Aidan O’Connell. In free agency, they came away with Gardner Minshew.

Minshew has proven to be a capable starter in the league. He had flashes of brilliance during his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles and last season with the Indianapolis Colts.

At the very least, Gardner Minshew is someone that a team can rely on to start games in a pinch. An elite backup option, he may have a less-than-ideal ceiling if he is your full-time starter heading into the season.

The training camp competition between O’Connell and Gardner Minshew is going to be one that people keep a close eye on. Should Minshew win the job, some people don’t believe he will make the most of it.

One of those people is David Kenyon of Bleacher Report. He recently put together a piece predicting one player from each team who will be a bust in 2024. For the Raiders, he selected their newest quarterback.

“On one hand, it’s fair to acknowledge that Gardner Minshew II is probably a caretaker option at best. Maybe the Raiders think Aidan O’Connell can be a long-term answer, but the more likely scenario is Las Vegas targets a top quarterback in the 2025 NFL draft,” Kenyon wrote.

It is quite possible that the Raiders’ starting quarterback in 2025 is not currently on the roster. O’Connell hasn’t done enough to confidently say he is the long-term option, as he still needs to beat out Gardner Minshew.

However, an argument can certainly be made that Minshew is an upgrade from O’Connell for at least 2024. He offers a little more when it comes to athleticism and the ability to move outside of the pocket.

Last season, Gardner Minshew reached the 300-yard plateau three times. O’Connell didn’t reach that mark once and had two appearances he was under 100 yards in; Minshew had zero.

As a long-term option, it would probably behoove the Raiders to seek other options. But labeling Gardner Minshew as a bust, when the team signed him as a short-term option, seems a bit harsh.
