With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations .

But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.

Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.

Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti ; The Gilded Age ‘s Nathan Lane; Ripley ‘s Johnny Flynn; Shogun ‘s Cosmo Jarvis; The Sympathizer ‘s Hoa Xuande and Fargo ‘s Jennifer Jason Leigh.

On the other side, some series saw their stars nominated while the shows failed to land nods in the overall series categories. Specifically, Loot was left out of the comedy series category despite a nod for star Maya Rudolph and Fellow Travelers, The Sympathizer and Under the Bridge were left out of the limited series category despite landing acting nods. And The Gentlemen was left out of the major comedy categories, but Guy Ritchie did score a directing nod.

And while The Bear set a record for most nominations by a comedy series in a single year with 23 nods, a number of the show’s castmembers weren’t nominated, with Abby Elliott and Matty Matheson missing out on supporting acting nods and Sarah Paulson and John Mulaney missing out on a guest acting nods for their roles in season two’s “Fishes.” Paulson was nominated for her role in Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Mulaney’s Netflix series, Everybody’s in L.A. , which awards experts thought might make it into the best talk series category, only earned one nomination for picture editing.

Indeed, the talk series category didn’t see hopeful newcomer Hot Ones nominated nor did long-running series Watch What Happens Live break in. Similarly, past nominees Real Time With Bill Maher and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon weren’t nominated this year.

Acclaimed series that failed to receive any nods, despite experts’ predictions, include Elsbeth , On e Day , We Were The Lucky Ones, I’m A Virgo, Mary & George and Lawmen: Bass Reeves .

In terms of surprises, this year’s nominations marked a strong showing for the third seasons of long-running Apple series The Morning Show (16 nominations) and Slow Horses (9 nominations), with the latter scoring its first Emmy nods.

Also breaking in for a later season is the critically lauded Reservation Dogs , which finally earned its first Emmy nominations in major categories for its third and final season. The show was nominated last year for sound editing. Still, actress Devery Jacobs wasn’t nominated this year, and the show didn’t make the cut in writing and directing categories. Fellow FX comedy What We Do in the Shadows made a comeback in the comedy series and comedy acting categories after it was only nominated in technical categories last year

In terms of individual nominations, Dominic West scored a surprise nod for The Crown after being snubbed last year as did Idris Elba for Hijack , both in the drama actor category.
