On Monday (July 15), Quincy Homere pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree manslaughter in connection to the late rap star’s death. Homere, who was initially charged with second degree murder, will be sentenced on Aug. 12 and is facing a minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum sentence of 25 years.
In 2015, Homere and a second suspect, Jamar Hill, allegedly trailed Chinx , born Lionel Pickens Jr., from a venue in Brooklyn following a live performance. Upon reaching Queens, the vehicle Homere and Hill was in pulled up beside the vehicle Chinx and another man were traveling in, upon which Chinx and his passenger where shot multiple times as their vehicle idled at a red stoplight.
While no arrests were immediately made in the wake of Chinx’s death, Homere and Hill were named as suspects in 2017, and both men were incarcerated on separate charges. In April 2018, Homere and Hill were formally charged with one count each of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
The alleged motive for the slaying was a previous beef between Homere and Chinx that turned physical on Riker’s Island years prior. “We’re not exactly sure what the fight was about but our perpetrator Quincy probably got the worst of it and he wanted to get back at Chinx,” NYPD Lt. Richard Rudolph said in 2017.
Prior to being charged with Chinx’s murder, Homere had been arrested on federal charges stemming from a 2015 bank robbery on Long Island. He would later admit to plotting the brazen holdup and be sentenced to 18 years in federal prison. The charges against Hill, who remains incarcerated, are still pending.
Janelli Caceres-Pickens, Chinx’s widow, shared her reaction to Homere’s guilty plea, which she says she was dissatisfied with, as she hoped the gunman would receive the harshest punishment possible by law.
“We definitely believe it should have been at least a murder 2 charge, but unfortunately with the odds that were against us, and the laws of the state of New York, it made it very hard to pursue that,” Caceres-Pickens said.
“We are not happy with this charge but one can not dodge whatever GOD has planned for him!” she also wrote in an Instagram comment . “Manslaughter has me livid [and] heartbroken. He deserves to spend his life in jail.”
Hip-hop artist Chinx attends BET 106 and Park on June 11, 2014 in New York City.
However, Caceres-Pickens commended the NYPD and prosecution for their efforts in seeking justice for her husband and their family.
“It’s closure for us so now I know there are no more court appearances after this, someone is being held accountable for what happened, so it’s a start.”
