FRIENDSHIP − A 38-year-old man being housed in the Adams County Jail is dead after being found unconscious in his jail cell Monday.

At 6:01 p.m. Monday, jail deputies found the man unresponsive in his cell, according to the Adams County Sheriff's Office. Deputies immediately began lifesaving efforts, and Lifestar Ambulance arrived at the jail four minutes later and took over from the deputies. Additional patrol deputies also responded to help.

The lifesaving efforts were not successful, and the man was pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff's Office. The inmate was first jailed on June 21 in another county and was transported to the Adams County Jail on July 1 and was being held as a sentenced inmate, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Wisconsin statutes require an outside agency to lead all investigations involving an officer-involved death, but this in-custody death investigation does not fall under the statute, according to the Sheriff's Office. However, the Adams County Sheriff's Office has requested the Waushara and Marquette county sheriff's offices to complete the investigation in the interest of transparency.

Adams County officials have notified the regional detention facility specialist from the Office of Detention Facilities. The Office of Detention Facilities also will conduct a review of the inmate's death.
