    What is Propagation?

Before we jump into the nitty-gritty of getting free lavender plants, let's talk about what propagation is. Propagation is a fancy gardening term for taking a part of a plant (like a stem or leaf) and growing a whole new plant from it. Think of it as plant cloning but without the sci-fi vibes. It's a great way to multiply your garden without emptying your wallet.

First things first, you need to find a lavender plant to take a cutting from. This can be as simple as asking your neighbor if you can snip a piece of their plant. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even ask a local business with a beautiful lavender display. Just remember to be polite and maybe offer a thank-you smile or a wave.

When selecting your lavender cutting, look for non-flowering young shoots. Avoid the ones already showing off their blooms. Instead, pick out a few shoots that are looking a bit more 'woody' at the base. These are the ones that have the best chance of growing into strong, healthy plants. Simon suggests taking a few cuttings to boost your chances of success. After all, the more, the merrier!

Now that you have your cuttings, it's time to get them ready for planting. Start by stripping the lower end of the stem free of leaves. You want to focus on the area that will be planted in the soil. Next, cut the stem just below the lowermost bud. This is where the roots will start to grow. It's like giving your cutting a fresh haircut before its big debut.

With your cutting prepped, it's time to plant it. Insert the stem around the edge of a pot filled with gritty compost. Make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging. Place the pot in a sunny spot, because lavender loves the sun as much as we do. Keep the soil moist by watering whenever it gets dry. In a few weeks, you should start to see roots sprouting.

Once your roots have sprouted, it's time to give your little lavender plant some space to grow. Transplant them into separate containers, each with its own cozy home. Continue to water them and watch as they grow. By next summer, you'll have gorgeous, blooming lavender plants that will make your garden the envy of the neighborhood. Sure, it takes time and patience, but the sweet smell of success is more than worth it.
