Lucid Says Its New Electric Car Is the Most Efficient Production EV Ever Made

Lucid is doing everything it can to ensure that it’s the brand that EV shoppers associate with efficiency.

The California-based company claims the 2025 Air Pure is the most efficient EV you can buy. The updated version of the company’s entry-level sedan gets five miles of range for every kilowatt hour (kWh) of battery capacity.

The new Air Pure isn’t radically different from last year’s model. The sedan’s powertrain, for example, appears to be the same single-motor setup that sent 430 hp to the rear axle in its predecessor. The battery the unit is connected to is smaller, though. The new pack has a usable capacity of 84 kWh, which is 4 kWh less capacity than its predecessor.

Using a smaller battery may seem like a strange way to boost efficiency, but the new unit also has the heat pump feature first found on the range-topping Air Sapphire , and eventually the Air Touring and Air Grand Touring. The new tech helps conserve energy and ensures that the car delivers excellent range even in cold-weather conditions.

Thanks to these changes the new Air Pure has a range of 420 miles, which is ten miles more than before. This means the four-door gets five miles of range for every single kWh of energy, a figure Lucid refers to as a “landmark” (the Mercedes-Benz EQXX has gets 8.1 per kWh of energy, but it’s just a prototype at this point). It also has a 146 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent) EPA rating, which the automaker says is a new record for a production vehicle.

“Lucid Air is the very embodiment of our relentless approach to optimization, enabling Air Pure to use less electrical energy than any other vehicle for any journey taken, A to B,” the company’s CEO and CTO, Peter Rawlinson, said in a statement.

Lucid is taking orders for the new Air Pure, which will start at $69,900, now through its website. It is one of three 2025 Air models that have been announced so far. The Touring, which has a range of 406 miles, starts at $77,900, and the Grand Touring, which has a range of 512 miles, starts at $109,900.
