House Republican Rips JD Vance Saying Ukraine Doesn’t Matter: ‘The Vice Presidency Doesn’t Matter All That Much’

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) took a shot at Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) on Wednesday over the 2024 Republican vice presidential nominee’s apathetic stance on Ukraine during the third year of the country’s defensive war against Russia.

CNN’s Boris Sanchez welcomed the Texas Republican on CNN News Central to discuss Vance’s scheduled remarks on the third night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Comments Vance has made in recent years about Washington’s policy toward funding Ukraine’s defense of its post-Soviet Union borders have become a topic of conversation, which Sanchez touched on.

When discussing how a win by former President Donald Trump in November could affect U.S. policy toward Kyiv, Sanchez asked Crenshaw to respond to comments Vance had made in which he said he had shared apathy toward Ukrainian sovereignty and would be pleased to see the conflict simply end without further U.S. involvement.

“It does seem like [Vance] was pretty clear when he said that he doesn’t care about what happens in Ukraine either way, but you don’t think that Ukraine is at all at risk of losing support with Trump in office?” Sanchez asked Crenshaw.

Crenshaw explained that Trump’s views on the war in Europe are much different than those of his 39-year-old running mate .

“Trump has never said that as JD Vance said, Trump has never said that, right?” Crenshaw replied. “Trump has come up with a different approach. I mean, the reason we made it a loan, what did Trump say? Let’s make it a loan. That’s basically the easiest loan ever with no interest and no timelines on it. Trump has always been pretty good about supporting Ukraine. When Obama was giving Ukraine blankets, Trump was giving them weapons.”

“So I’m not as worried about about the Trump presidency,” the congressman added. “Again, JD Vance says Ukraine doesn’t matter all that much. Well, the vice presidency doesn’t matter all that much either.”

Crenshaw concluded, “The president is what matters and that’s who I’m voting for.”

During a 2022 interview with former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon , Vance previously said, “I gotta be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another. I do care about the fact that in my community right now the leading cause of death among 18-45-year-olds is Mexican fentanyl that’s coming across the southern border.”
