MILWAUKEE, WI ( KXNET ) — On Wednesday evening, Governor Doug Burgum will be on stage at the Republican National Convention.

After being on the shortlist, Burgum was not chosen to be Donald Trump’s running mate this week on the presidential ticket. Instead, Trump chose Ohio Senator JD Vance.

However, in the past year, Burgum has traveled with Trump to several campaign events, and North Dakota senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer say they’ve spoken with Trump about Burgum’s experience. If elected in November, Trump is likely to appoint Burgum to a Cabinet post.

Gov. Doug Burgum has been told he will not be chosen as Trump’s running mate

“He could do Treasury, he could do Commerce, he could do Interior, he could do Energy,” said Representative Kelly Armstrong. “He’s one of the smartest people in the country and understands those issues that affect people who actually do it are the people on the ground and not the government. I think he has tremendous opportunities to help the Trump administration.”

“With his business background,” said Senator Hoeven, “he’d be a candidate for commerce secretary. And of course, energy, because our two big areas are ag and energy. Arguably, it could be ag too, but I don’t think so.”

Burgum will be on stage at 7:16 p.m. He’s been given just over 10 minutes to speak, right before Trump’s former senior counselor Kellyanne Conway.

Vance will be Wednesday night’s headline speaker and will give his speech at 9:30 p.m.
