CHICOPEE, Mass, (WWLP) – Massachusetts has seen adverse weather through most of July, but the concern that arguably affects us the most is heat.

Heat advisories have been active for the past 3 days, with heat index values in the triple digits.

“This is been a pretty warm summer definitely above average in terms of the temperatures at least for July,” says 22News Storm Team Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis.

We’ve already seen double the amount of 90-degree days in comparison to 2023, but the humidity also plays a large role in the “feels like” temperatures. 2023 only saw one heat wave all year in early September. Heavy rain last summer played a factor, as consistent rainfall can drop temperatures significantly.

“Compared to last summer it’s definitely different last summer was very wet and a little cooler but this summer it’s it’s hot and humid,” adds Bouzakis.

While western Massachusetts saw many thunderstorm advisories over the past few weeks, it’s of no comparison to rainfall totals from last year. Westover Air Reserve Base recorded over 7 inches of rain by the middle of July in 2023.
