NBC will be happy and relieved with its late-night Emmy haul with Late Night with Seth Meyers staving off the threat of John Mulaney, and Saturday Night Live almost doubling its nominations from last year.

Comedy Central, which tied its own record with seven nominations for The Daily Show , HBO, which increased the number of noms that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver received and CBS, which scored five for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , will also all be pleased.

John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In LA had been touted as a possible new entry into the main late-night talk category but couldn’t unseat Meyers, Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel or The Daily Show, which won last year and is now hosted, in part, by Jon Stewart. The Netflix show was only in the pictured editing category.

Saturday Night Live scored 17 nominations, which was nearly double the nine that it received last year. In addition to Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, where it will go head-to-head with Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, SNL was helped by a trio of guest stars including Ryan Gosling, who went viral with the Beavis and Butthead sketch, and former SNL ers Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, who returned to host. Bowen Yang was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and it received one short-form nomination for Behind The Sketch.

SNL will now face John Oliver after an unusual nomination process for the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category. These two shows were “screened by the appropriate peer group for nomination”, which is thought to have included voters from a number of genres, and both received more than 70% of votes from this group during the voting, which took place between June 28 and July 8. It will now proceed in the same way as all other categories.

The Daily Show tied its own 2022 record of seven nominations including in Outstanding Talk Series, where it won with former host Trevor Noah last year, and writing and directing nods.

Equally as pleasing for its team, new hosts Jordan Klepper and Desi Lydic were also nominated for their work. Lydic’s Foxsplains was nominated for Outstanding Performer in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series, while Jordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse – Moscow Tools landed a technical nomination.

After the Cut was also nominated in the Outstanding Short Form Non-Fiction or Reality Series category, competing with SNL with Behind The Sketch, The Crown, Hacks and Shogun.

Talking of short-form, Meyers’ Corrections , a weekly YouTube series where he corrects his own work, returned to the Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series category after missing out last year.

Corrections is once again up against James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke , which won in 2021 and 2022 but was beaten by I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson last year, as well as The Eric Andre Show, Real Time with Bill Maher: Overtime and Only Murders In The Building: One Killer Question.

In addition to Outstanding Talk Series, Meyers is up for Outstanding Music Direction, which is somewhat ironic given that NBC has just cut his 8G band due to budgetary reasons.

Last Week Tonight secured six nominations, including a number of technical and picture editing nods, up from four last year.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is also up one extra nomination from last year, taking its total to five. In addition to the main talk nom, it also secured a directing nomination, where it will compete against Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which got two noms, The Daily Show and SNL.

The Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series will be competed for by The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and SNL with Late Night with Seth Meyers missing out as it went from five nominations to four. Oliver’s team has won that eight years in a row.
