Biden’s Democratic doubters are letting him run out the clock

Democrats are still completely lost on what to do with President Joe Biden ’s flailing campaign, meaning Biden may run out the clock on the idea that he can be replaced before the 2024 election.

The Democratic National Committee has been planning on fast-tracking Biden’s nomination to keep Democrats in line after Biden’s disastrous debate performance. House Democrats began circulating a letter opposing this plan. The DNC then punted the process back to the first week of August, which apparently satisfied House Democrats enough to drop the letter. The DNC, where Biden would otherwise be nominated, is on Aug. 19.

Out of context, this all seems rather dumb. Biden is the incumbent president and won the Democratic presidential primary. In all, it doesn’t really matter if he is nominated via virtual roll call now (around the same time the GOP nominated former President Donald Trump), or if that happens in the first week of August, or if it happens at the convention. Why would any of this matter if Democrats didn’t want to try and replace Biden before the clock ran out?

Everyone knows this is the case. That is why the DNC is trying to keep everyone in line by forcing an earlier vote while the DNC chairman argues with pundits on social media. That is also why House Democrats were opposing this move even though it doesn’t actually “rush” anything, given that Biden already won the nomination through the primaries. And yet, unlike with the DNC, these Biden doubters are operating with no urgency, allowing Biden to slink by day by day and increasing the effects of the inevitable fallout if they were to get their way and replace him.

Biden’s newfound doubters in the Democratic Party are acting as if each day that goes by will provide them with a magic escape from Biden’s candidacy. In reality, they are allowing Biden and his team to run out the clock. The political consequences of replacing Biden rise with each passing day, giving him more and more leverage and leaving those turncoat Democrats with no choice but to finally fall in line or risk shouldering the blame for a loss to Trump in November.

Democrats could have ripped off this bandage before the primaries even started, making it clear Biden should hand the reins to the next generation of Democrats. They didn’t, nor did they have the confidence and courage to push heavily to replace Biden right after the debate. Complaints behind closed doors aren’t going to do anything but let Biden limp into the nomination while members of his party are on the record undermining him in a lose-lose situation for the Democratic Party. This is the price of political arrogance.
