The Bear just made Emmy Awards history.

The FX series, which stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edibiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and others, made history with its 23 Emmy nominations for a comedy series on Wednesday, July 17. Season two of The Bear now surpasses the Emmy record held by NBC’s 30 Rock since 2009 with 22. The show was also nominated for lead comedy actor (Jeremy Allen White), lead comedy actress (Ayo Edebiri), supporting comedy actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Lionel Boyce), supporting comedy actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), directing (Storer for Fishes and Ramy Youssef for Honeydew TK) and writing (Fishes by Joanna Calo and Storer).

The show has picked up in popularity since the series premiere on June 23, 2022, but some feel like its Emmy nomination in comedy was not necessary.

One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: "I love The Bear, but it isn’t a comedy. It’s a great drama with some humor, but in no way should it be winning #Emmy awards over real comedies like Only Murderers, Abbot Elementary or Hacks." Another person wrote: "Look, I think The Bear is a very good show. I love Ayo in it. I love Robert Townsend in it (my King). And my goodness Liza Colón-Zayas deserves every flower. But it needs another category. It's not a comedy. And calling it a comedy is eroding our perception of what a comedy is."

A third person wrote: "I still maintain "The Bear" is not a comedy. It's a brilliant Chaos Drama, with just the right sprinkling of Dark Comedy." A fourth wrote: "The fact that people keep referring to the bear as a comedy is killing me."

The Bear took home eight awards at the 2023 Emmy Awards with Ayo wining best supporting actress in a comedy, Jeremy winning best actor in a comedy, best comedy series and more.

Season three made history when the premiere received 5.4 million views worldwide in the first four days of release. The new season was supposed to release on June 27 but released a day earlier and has had now the best performance ever for an FX show on Hulu. It also became the most-watched premiere for any scripted show and the third biggest season premiere of all time for the streaming platform.
