Los Angeles Chargers Tease Darker Rebrand Under Jim Harbaugh

Fans of the Los Angeles Chargers have been spoiled by the best branding and jerseys in the league for decades. Now that the Jim Harbaugh era has officially begun, would the franchise look to market itself in a manner more becoming of a tough, hard-nosed, winning football team?

Well, it looks like the social media team may have teased just that.

The Chargers have already been transparent with new branding within their building, particularly the There Every Day (T.E.D.) signage posted around the facility. Now, exactly one week before the start of training camp, the team is starting to hint at a complete tonal shift.

The color scheme is significantly darker, and based on the caption the team looks to be aiming for a stormy theme over a more light-hearted sunny vibe.

Chargers Senior Vice President of Brand Creative and Content Jason Lavine couldn't help but break out the now-famous eye emojis in response to a graphic designer teasing a year-long project with the team.

Lavine also teased a feature role for former player and current Chargers ambassador Shawne Merriman 15 minutes prior to kickoff. So, what does this all mean?

Fans have been quick to note the lack of royal or navy alternates in Chargers media posts, which one would imagine is no coincidence. A navy alternate would be both exciting for fans and a perfect match for darker throwback jerseys from Harbaugh's time as the team's quarterback. It would also fit the darker tonal shift.

Speaking of which, if a similar branding shift continues through gameday, the Chargers could do away with the lighter blue coloring and smiley-faced emojis seen at SoFi Stadium the past few years. While Harbaugh warns to not let the powder blues fool you (and those jerseys aren't going anywhere), there appears to be a desire to rebrand the Chargers as a tougher team.

The countdown to training camp is winding down. By then, Chargers fans may have a clearer (or perhaps stormier) idea of what the team has planned.
