Boise State adds Washington player of year to 2025 class; defenders make watch lists

The latest player to join the Boise State football team’s 2025 recruiting class is the reigning Class 2B State Player of the Year in Washington.

Okanogan High’s Carter Kuchenbuch verbally committed to the Broncos on Tuesday. He racked up 1,597 yards of offense and 37 touchdowns last season while leading Okanogan to a state championship and earning all-state honors as a dual-threat quarterback and defensive end.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound three-star recruit would play a new position for the Broncos. He’ll begin his college career as a tight end, which is a position he hasn’t played in his high school career. He got the chance to experience it during a camp at Boise State in June, and he did well enough to earn a scholarship offer from the Broncos.

“The only question I had was could I play tight end at the next level after never doing it?” Kuchenbuch told Sports Illustrated. “I did the drills — the blocking and pass catching — and honestly it fit me better.”

Kuchenbuch is the No. 3 tight end in Washington, according to 247Sports. He also has scholarship offers from Washington State, Air Force, Army, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana and UC Davis, but he said he chose Boise State because the Broncos’ coaches made him earn his offer at the camp in June.

“They did not just show up to the front door and offer me, or cold call me randomly,” Kuchenbuch told Sports Illustrated. “They told me: ‘There is a chance, but you have to work for it.’ And that felt more meaningful to me.”

Kuchenbuch finished his junior season with 571 yards and nine touchdowns through the air and 975 yards and 27 touchdowns on the ground, according to MaxPreps. He also caught a touchdown pass and racked up 50 tackles and two sacks as a defensive end. He posted 882 passing yards, 314 rushing yards and 19 total touchdowns as a sophomore.

Teubner is a Good Works Team nominee

Boise State safety Alexander Teubner joined 178 athletes across the country as nominees for the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Wednesday.

The sixth-year senior was named honorable mention All-Mountain West last season after posting a team-high 85 tackles and adding five pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble. He was also named Defensive MVP of the Mountain West championship game after racking up 10 tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble in the Broncos’ win over UNLV.

Teubner, a native of Seaside, Oregon, has volunteered at various local schools throughout his career, as well as St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, the Boise Rescue Mission and the Idaho Foodbank, according to a press release from Boise State. He served as a captain in four games last season and received a bachelor’s degree in finance in December.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizes college football players for their commitment to community service. Nominees are eligible for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is awarded annually to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on and off the field.

Pair of defenders on East-West watch list

Boise State defensive end Ahmed Hassanein and cornerback A’Marion McCoy were named to the East-West Shrine Bowl watch list on Wednesday.

Hassanien, a senior from Egypt, was named the Mountain West’s Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year last week after he led the Broncos and ranked No. 2 in the conference with 12.5 sacks last season. He was a first-team all-conference pick last year after becoming the first Boise State player to finish a season with more than 10 sacks since Curtis Weaver posted 13.5 in 2019.

McCoy was also named preseason All-Mountain West last week after he led the Broncos with three interceptions last season. The senior earned honorable mention all-conference honors last year after joining the Broncos following two seasons at Laney College in California.

The 100th edition of the East-West Shrine Bowl will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Jan. 30, 2025. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. MT and the game will air on NFL Network.
