Hung Cao, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Virginia , had strong words about his opponent, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), while speaking at the Republican National Convention .

"Tim Kaine is a weak man in a dangerous world," Cao said at the convention Tuesday night, where he also shared his life story about being a Vietnam refugee and decorated Navy combat veteran.

The Virginia Republican then spoke to a local radio station Wednesday morning and expressed confidence about his Senate race.

"Virginia is in play," Cao said to WMAL .

The Navy veteran shared his concerns about Kaine's involvement in tackling issues that were important to Virginians.

"Where's Tim Kaine been? Where was he when COVID-19 happened and children were trying to catch up from years of missing school? Where was he when businesses were shut down — some of these were handed down from generation to generation. People are struggling to get food on the table, pump gas, and buy a house," he said.

He added, "Where was Tim Kaine when we lost Afghanistan? Where was Tim Kaine when the world is walking all over us?"

The Virginia Commonwealth University’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs released a new poll that shows former President Donald Trump ahead in Virginia . However, Kaine still has a lead in the Senate race. Kaine is at 49% while Cao remains at 38%.

Cao acknowledges that despite the boost of being featured in prime time at the RNC, his campaign still "has a lot of work to do."

The veteran is facing a longtime Virginia politician who was governor from 2006 to 2010, a former Democratic National Committee chairman, and has been a U.S. senator for the commonwealth since 2013.

Trump had campaigned in June with Cao in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) revealed on Hannity Tuesday night how he believed the GOP could win Virginia in 2024.

"People used to ask me all the time: 'How are you going to win northern Virginia?' And I said, 'We're not. We're going to lose it less badly, and if we get 40% of the vote in northern Virginia, and we draw even in our cities of Richmond and Hampton Roads, and then if we blow it out in our rural counties, we'll win,'" the governor said.

Rich Anderson, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, said on Wednesday that Virginia has been a "big" topic of conversation at the Republican convention. He noted that Trump has been "perched right above" the Virginia delegation during the convention.

Anderson, who struggled to get funds and resources from the Republican National Committee under former Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel's leadership, now says they are in "a new era" as he praised the leadership of Chairman Michael Whatley. He described the RNC and the Trump campaign as a "unified force" working to provide Virginia with "immense resources."
