JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — It’s been nearly six months since the Onslow County Sheriff’s Department started Project Lifesaver, but only two people are using it.

The tracker can either go on the wrist or ankle through a band that resembles a hospital bracelet. Once on, police can either use an antenna on top of their car or a handheld one to scan nearly a mile radius.

Deputy Robert Winners gave a presentation on Wednesday at the Onslow County Senior Center to show the benefits of the bracelet. Some of his concerns are people just not knowing about the project and the potential financial burden since he still believes in the importance of the project.

“Just our motto, bringing the loved ones home. I don’t ever, as a deputy sheriff want to locate an individual because they’ve wandered off. With the heat of today being dehydrated and and, you know, and start to have starvation, you know, to where either they receive, you know, severe injury or possible death,” Winners said.

If you’re interested in getting a wristband, contact the Onslow County Sheriff’s Department to get started.
