Hanover County superintendent announces resignation

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Hanover County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Gill has announced he will be resigning from his position in a message addressed to families, faculty and staff .

“After a decade of service, I recognize that the School Board has new goals and objectives it wishes to achieve,” Gill said in his message. “To accomplish this, a new leader is needed to work with the Board in these future endeavors.”

The Hanover County School Board will review Gill’s resignation at an upcoming meeting on Tuesday, July 23.

“Your School Board is actively working to identify an interim superintendent to begin as soon as reasonably possible,” said Hanover County School Board Chair Bob May in a statement on Wednesday. “We wish to thank Dr. Gill for his service to the Hanover County Public Schools and wish him well in all future endeavors.”

Gill was hired as superintendent for the school district in November 2015 after having served as the county’s assistant superintendent a year prior. He earned a Doctor of Education, Master’s degree and post-Master’s certificate at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

“While I am excited for the next chapter of my life as I explore other opportunities, I will sincerely miss the many wonderful people I have encountered along this journey,” Gill said. “I will forever cherish the memories and the many relationships formed over the years. Thank you to the families, educators, support staff, business partners, faith leaders, advisory groups, civic organizations, our broader community and so many others for your engagement and collaboration over the past decade. I am especially grateful for the students and the resilience, creativity, and determination they display every day.”
